Welcome to Article 12 Aotearoa

Article 12 Aotearoa is a space for to come to find out about child and youth rights and connect with others. You can also join into forums, polls and conversations as well as submit your own content.

Article 12 is based on the Save the Children NZ research project conducted in 2010 with young people throughout Aotearoa. Project leader, Dr Fi, travelled the country and worked with groups of youth to create digital stories for a complete report that was sent to the United Nations.

Whilst the project is finished, Article 12 remains as a site to come, view the stories, find out about your rights, become a member and empower others to make a difference. We have a way to go let Aotearoa. Let's get moving!

Hearing from Young Mums: Education and Transport

This week, Sara and I traveled far and wide into a Teen Parent Unit to hear the stories from young mums. This group was truly amazing!! They had all felt the discrimination from people about being young and being a mum. But instead of giving up they had each decided to take up the promise of education and make a difference for themselves and for their children. Both Sara and I were blown away with the stories and experiences from these young mums.

Both of us saw mothers that… Continue

The right to know your rights, nuclear bombs, gangs, police and violence: The stories keep coming

Gs, Sara and I have been busy over the last couple of weeks. Last week we journeyed all over New Zealand - even having our meals at the airport!!!! And we got a number of stories all looking at a variety of issues. In one place we had a completely different perspective on youth gangs, the media and families. We also had a story on the right to actually know your rights. Elsewhere we got stories about the relationship between young people and the police. We also got stories of the… Continue

From Education to Mental Health, Drugs and Alcohol, Gangs, Violence and Opinion - The Stories get Deeper

Well over the last seven days, Sara and I have met with young people three times to explore what life is like for them in New Zealand. These last few days have been moving and challenging. The groups we have talked to have all had experiences of being picked on and put down - either by others at school, by their families, or by their communities. These stories only come from a few young people, but if they represent what life is like for others - we have a long way to go in New… Continue

The realities of education in New Zealand and the 'problem' of gangs

So, Sara and I have been continuing our travels around the countryside. Last week we were lucky to venture into one of New Zealand's small/big town/cities to connect with two groups of young people over two days. And, we both learnt a lot through these young people's experiences. For myself, I was reminded of the realities of gangs in New Zealand. No matter what community you venture into, you are most likely to see gangs at some point. The story the young people shared with me was… Continue
